Boston Video Art on the Sidewalk

Since January, people have been able to stand outside Fountain Street Gallery and come face-to-face with a piece of art. The gallery’s sidewalk has two monitors that broadcast the work of various artists 24/7.

Some artists, like Claudia Ruiz Gustafson, have incorporated text. Others, such as Sofie Hodara, have documented the cityscape through her telescope.

The Sidewalk Video Gallery

The gallery, which showcases contemporary art in the heart of SoWa, offers two 50-inch monitors that face out at sidewalk level. The Sidewalk Video Gallery broadcasts short, silent works that showcase a wide range of artists, styles, and thematic content. The program is free and open to the public 24/7.

Some of the videos are purely visual, but others, like Claudia Ruiz Gustafson’s “I Am,” feature text. The piece shows the artist on a beach, looking outward at the horizon, letting sand fall through her fingers, and cradling the wing of a bird.

The Sidewalk Video Gallery has expanded the gallery’s reach during the pandemic, said Craig, even when people haven’t been able to come inside. The project is a good way to connect with the community during a difficult time, she said. It has also made the gallery’s work more accessible to a diverse audience. The Sidewalk Video Gallery will continue indefinitely, she added.

Fountain Street Gallery

Fountain Street Gallery is a contemporary fine art gallery that features a variety of media in their main and annex galleries. The gallery features solo, group, and invitational exhibits as well as community events and installations. Located in the SoWa arts district, Fountain Street Gallery features both emerging and established artists from around the area.

The gallery recently installed a new generative piece by Kitauna Parker called Ephemeral Days. This art installation is a visual interpretation of Parker’s poetry and combines colors, flow, layers, texture and words to create a hypnotic experience.

The piece demonstrates how form and emptiness interact through a push and pull. Core members of Fountain Street Gallery use this concept to explore how a single idea can be expressed in many different ways.
