The Fashion & Apparel Industry

The Fashion & Apparel industry encompasses a broad range of styles and trends. The traditional dividing line between wholesale and retail, for instance, has become blurred, as stores have developed distinctions such as juniors or contemporary, aimed at particular types of customers.

Like popular culture, such as music or news, fashion is constantly evolving. This constant change is one reason why speed to market is so critical for apparel companies.

Fashion Design

Fashion designers apply design, aesthetics, and clothing construction to garments and accessories. They select fabrics and materials, sketch designs, and construct prototypes to bring their ideas to life. They also oversee teams to bring their work to the market.

The textile industry is a global business, with four levels: the production of raw materials (fibers and textiles); the production of clothing by designers, manufacturers, contractors and other workers; the distribution of fashion goods to retail stores and other outlets; and the marketing of these goods. It is a highly competitive and dynamic industry that reflects changing consumer preferences, technological developments, and economic trends.

There are many types of fibers, but the most common is cotton. Other popular types include polyester, nylon, acrylic and wool. Different fibers have different properties. For example, some have a high luster, while others may be hydrophobic or oleophilic. They can also affect the elasticity of fabric or cause pilling, which is caused by tiny broken fibers.

Merchandising

Merchandising is the practice of in-store promotion that aims to encourage a consumer to buy. It encompasses a range of activities, from product placement to signage. For example, visual merchandisers arrange displays to incite consumers to purchase add-ons such as coffee beans or stylish mugs, while also ensuring that products are easy for shoppers to locate.
